The Champaign Park District has decided to close the city's oldest public pool.
The park board voted to close Spalding Pool at a meeting Wednesday night. The pool, at 910 N. Harris Ave., across from Franklin Middle School, has been plagued by leaks and other structural problems for several years.
Champaign Park District Executive Director Bobbie Herokavich said the board realized that the pool had reached the end of its useable life.
Herokavich said all activities that would have taken place at Spalding Pool will be moved to Centennial Pool at Sholem Aquatic Center this summer.
She said the park district doesn't have any specific plans at this point on how to replace the pool. But, she said the district has been surveying Champaign residents to find out what they want in future parks and recreation facilities.
