Law enforcement officials are asking people to be aware of a potential scam by someone who is sending text messages claiming to be from an area bank.
The text messages claim to be someone from First Midwest Bank, which has a branch on Springfield Avenue in Champaign. The message asks the person to call the bank.
Urbana Police Department Investigator Dave Smysor says most legitimate businesses are not going to send text messages if they need information from a customer. Smysor says people need to protect their personal information.
- Hear from Dave Smysor.
Smysor says if you think it might be a legitimate request, go to your local branch and speak with bank representatives to see if they sent the message.
He says it is clearly a red flag if you don't bank at the financial institution that contacts you.
Smysor says you can contact police to make them aware of the potential scam, but he also suggests alerting the banking institution that you supposedly received the message from.
First Midwest Bank could not be reached for comment on Monday.
