CHAMPAIGN — A 35-year-old Champaign man is being held in the Champaign County jail after his arrest Friday night for allegedly robbing a Champaign gas station at gunpoint.
Edward Lonnie Taylor, who listed an address in the 2800 block of Campbell Drive, is accused of holding up the Meijer Gas Station, 2201 N. Prospect Ave., about 10:50 p.m.
Police were sent there after a man demanded money from the clerk and left with an undisclosed amount of cash and merchandise. No employees were hurt and the robber was seen leaving the area on foot.
Police officer Kristina Trock and her canine partner found a person in a nearby parking lot matching the description of the robber given by a witness. She and Officer Matt Iverson, who also has a canine partner, tracked the man, who ran from them and scaled a fence into a nearby apartment complex.
Two other officers found Taylor hiding in a stairwell of the complex and arrested him.
He was being held in lieu of $200,000 bond on preliminary charges of armed robbery, resisting arrest and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
