URBANA — An autopsy done Wednesday on an Urbana woman who died after having a seizure early Monday at the Champaign County jail was inconclusive.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said it's too early to say exactly what killed Melissa Lackey, 36, who died at Carle Foundation Hospital at 5:34 p.m. Monday.
"She definitely did not have an aneurysm or a subarchnoid hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain)," Northrup said.
Those preliminary causes were suggested to Sheriff Dan Walsh by medical staff at Carle. But Northrup said the autopsy did not confirm either of those possibilities.
"We definitely did not find any signs of trauma," Northrup added.
The coroner said further examination will be done to see if a cause of death can be determined. He said it will be at least three weeks before more results are available.
Mrs. Lackey was admitted to the county jail in downtown Urbana on Jan. 27 after being sentenced to a five-year prison term for retail theft.
A cellmate reported to correctional officers that she appeared to be having a seizure at 2:12 a.m. Monday.
