URBANA — An autopsy conducted over the weekend indicates an Urbana man killed in a single-vehicle crash in rural Sidney on Friday night died from multiple traumatic injuries.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said that an autopsy performed on Sunday in Urbana indicated that Gordon R. Ferran, 47, who lived in the 2700 block of Brownfield Road, died from multiple traumatic injuries following a crash at about 10:20 p.m. Friday on County Road 1000 N, also referred to as the Sidney Slab.
Northrup said Mr. Ferran was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:30 p.m.
According to a Champaign County sheriff's report, Mr. Ferran was driving his pickup truck west on 1000 N and had just crossed 1900 E when, for an unknown reason, the truck began to skid.
It then spun and hit the south ditch and began to roll over, hitting a utility pole as it rolled, breaking it. Mr. Ferran was the only one inside the Dodge Ram, which eventually came to a stop on its wheels in a field.
A passerby saw the truck and called for help. Because there were power lines on it, emergency workers couldn't get to Mr. Ferran until Ameren employees were able to cut the power.
Northrup said an inquest may be held at a later date.
The death is under investigation by Northup's office and the Champaign County sheriff's office.
