URBANA — "Fewer than 10" jobs will be eliminated at Supervalu's facilities in Champaign-Urbana as a result of plans to cut 800 positions nationally, company spokesman Mike Siemienas said.
The Supervalu distribution center in Urbana and the W. Newell & Co. produce center in Champaign together employ about 500, Siemienas said.
Supervalu said the reductions, expected to take place by Feb. 25, include both current positions and open jobs that won't be filled.
The company said it hopes to reduce permanent expenses and operating costs so it can provide more competitive pricing to customers.
"The announcement affects all company offices and crosses most departments within the organization," Supervalu said in a news release. However, store-level associates won't be affected.
Employees whose jobs are eliminated could be eligible for severance and outplacement services, based on guidelines, the company said.
Supervalu, which has annual sales of about $37 billion, has about 135,000 employees.
Its network includes 1,104 traditional retail stores, 798 in-store pharmacies, 1,309 "hard-discount" stores and 1,900 independent stores served by the company's traditional food distribution business.
