MAHOMET — The Mahomet-Seymour school board has formally voted to fire junior high wrestling coach Theo Plothe, effective immediately.
The school board held a special meeting Thursday evening in closed session and then voted publicly to dismiss Plothe.
Plothe was originally removed from his job following an incident at a wrestling meet in Orion in Henry County earlier this month. An assistant coach said he witnessed Plothe smacking his players' genitals in order to motivate the wrestlers.
Mahomet Police Chief Mike Metzler passed his department's reports to the Henry County sheriff's office, which confirmed that the case is under investigation and has been forwarded to the state's attorney there.
Plothe had served as wrestling coach since the beginning of the school year.
