The public will soon be able to get a look at a new Champaign County facility that will serve as the home for the coroner and also house some services for the county clerk.
The new building, at 202 S. Art Bartell Road, U, will be used to store election equipment and supplies. Election judges will bring equipment, ballots and supplies there at the close of the March 20 primary.
The building also provides a central location for all of the operations of the coroner's office.
Coroner Duane Northrup says before this new building, autopsies had to be done in McLean County. But now he says the new space allows autopsies to be done here, and that makes things much more convenient.
- Hear from Duane Northrup.
Northrup says the new building does bring the possibility of other counties bringing their autopsies here. But he says he's not sure if Champaign County would be able to make any money from that.
The public can tour the new coroner and county clerk facility on Feb 29 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
