URBANA — A St. Joseph man who allegedly stole items from a friend over the weekend has been charged with residential burglary.
Champaign County sheriff's Lt. Ed Ogle said that Rex Walden, 36, had been staying with friends in rural St. Joseph the latter part of last week and that on Saturday, he allegedly stole cash and a shotgun from the house, then sold the shotgun to another person to get crack cocaine.
The owner of the gun did not report the theft until early Tuesday, Ogle said.
Patrol deputies interviewed Walden about the theft in the county jail, where he had been since Saturday night on an unrelated drug charge.
In the earlier case, Ogle said, a deputy had spotted Walden driving in northeast Urbana about 8:30 p.m. Saturday and stopped his car in the 1000 block of Geraldine. Learning that Walden's license was revoked, the deputy arrested Walden. During a search, the deputy found 11 Xanax pills in Walden's jeans pocket. Walden was charged Tuesday with possession of a controlled substance for that.
On Wednesday, the other charges of residential burglary and armed habitual criminal were lodged against him in connection with the theft of the gun and cash from the rural St. Joseph home.
