TUSCOLA — The Douglas County sheriff's office has identified a man who died from an apparent gunshot wound at a rest area in Tuscola on Wednesday.
According to a sheriff's office report, Randell S. Chaney, 53, of Decatur, was pronounced dead at the scene by a representative of the Douglas County coroner's office.
According to the report, emergency personnel were called to the rest area at the intersection of U.S. 45 and U.S. 36 in Tuscola at about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday.
They found Mr. Chaney slumped over in the seat of his 2010 Ford F-150. After medical personnel examined Mr. Chaney, they asked the coroner's office to send somebody to the scene.
According to the report, a preliminary investigation showed that Mr. Chaney died from an apparent gunshot wound, with no indication of foul play.
The sheriff's office is continuing its investigation of the incident, according to the report.
Soooo, we're saying that it's apparently self-inflicted? Some more clarity would be good, I might not see a follow up to this story and I'll have to wonder whether I should be worried about being shot at a rest stop. Thanks.
Re-read the article carefully, "no indication of foul play"!
He was a good man! He was important to more than just his family members, he was important in our whole community. He was my cousin, he was a rock. Sometimes things just happen!
Randy, we love and miss you!
