UPDATED 7:40 p.m.
CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police are investigating how six people managed to steal nearly $14,000 of electronics in the middle of the day at a Champaign store.
According to a Champaign police report, five men and a woman apparently worked together to take 20 telephones and two tablets from The Wireless Store, formerly known as Barbeck Communications, 7 Convenience Center Drive at 1:15 p.m. March 29.
Police said on Monday that two of them entered the store and began to talk to the store clerks there, distracting them.
While the first two people kept the clerks occupied, the other four people entered the store and began removing merchandise from cabinets near the sales floor.
After the six of them left the building, the employees noticed that the 20 phones and two tablets had been removed.
The total value of the stolen merchandise was listed at $13,868.
The description of the thieves was incomplete.
Nobody had been arrested in connection with the incident as of Monday night.
Police also reported that 91 cellphones, two computers and some computer accessories were taken in a burglary at the Sprint Store, 61 E. Marketview Drive, C., just before midnight Sunday night.
Police were uncertain on Monday night whether the Sprint Store burglary was related to The Wireless Store thefts.
