URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly broke into a west Champaign apartment Monday morning has been charged with residential burglary.
According to Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn, officers were sent to the Countrybrook Apartments in the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue about 9:30 a.m. on a report that men were seen running from an apartment by a neighbor who also chased them.
Dunn said the neighbor told police he heard a loud noise coming from the apartment, looked out and saw two men walking down the stairs carrying a television and other items.
When the men saw the neighbor, they dropped the items and ran. Police arrived in time to see two men running through the complex.
They arrested Duston Smith-Fondville, 19, of the 3100 block of West Daniel Street.
Police talked to the woman who lived there and learned she left about 8 a.m. and when she returned home, found her door had been forced open and the apartment ransacked.
Two televisions and other electronic items had been taken but were later recovered by police.
If convicted of residential burglary, Smith-Fondville faces penalties ranging from four to 15 years in prison.
Smith-Fondville’s bond was set at $10,000. His next court appearance was set for June 12.
