CHAMPAIGN β No one was injured as a direct result of a fire that damaged an older home near the intersection of Church and New streets just after 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Champaign fire Capt. Bob Quinlan estimates that the blaze did about $12,000 worth of damage to the home. Investigators were still on the scene and had not determined a cause by 7 p.m. Sunday.
No one was in the second-story apartment unit where the blaze burned a kitchen, but a resident in a first-floor apartment was home while fire burned above him. He did not know the building was on fire until firefighters arrived, but exited safely, Quinlan said.
βHe became aware of our presence there, when we were forcing entry through the door,β Quinlan said.
A fire support staff member tripped and fell outside the home. Quinlan said she appeared to be OK.
