URBANA -- Champaign County Board members Thursday night approved two union contracts giving employees wage increases of about 2 percent but also requiring them to make a contribution, for the first time, for their health insurance coverage.
Up to now the county had paid 100 percent of an employee's single coverage premium. With the change, employees will pay $7.50 a month beginning in fiscal year 2013, increasing to $10 a month in fiscal year 2014. Also in fiscal year 2014, the county will make a $30 per month contribution to dependent coverage premium for those enrolled in dependent coverage. Previously the county did not contribute to the additional cost of dependent coverage.
The contracts cover about 150 AFSCME general unit employees and 13 court security employees in the Fraternal Order of Police.
Also Thursday, the board approved resolutions honoring former Republican board members Alan Nudo and Brad Jones for their service. And the board was informed that board Chair C. Pius Weibel had appointed Democratic board member Carol Ammons to a jail space improvement project planning team.
Six of 27 board members were absent Thursday night, among them Republicans Steve Moser, Steve O'Connor and Jon Schroeder, and Democrats James Quisenberry, Chris Alix and Ammons.
