TOLONO -- No one was hurt on Sunday after fire destroyed a garage at 106 N. Condit St., but at least one explosion rattled the neighborhood.
Fire investigators know that an acetylene torch exploded, but Tolono Fire Lt. Brian Lukenbill said the cause of the fire itself is still undetermined. Fire officials have yet to determine if the explosion caused the fire or if the flames set off the explosion.
The metal structure was a total loss; the damage is estimated between $80,000 and $90,000, Lukenbill said.
Tolono firefighters were dispatched just after 2 p.m. on Sunday. When they arrived several minutes later, the garage was fully engulfed in flames. They had the fire out within 20 to 30 minutes after they arrived, Lukenbill said.
Trucks from both Tolono and Savoy responded to the fire, and black smoke could be seen as far away as Unity High School.
