We asked Fred Kroner for his thoughts on the area Class 2A soccer tournament, which begins next week. His thoughts:
One area team is a guaranteed winner next week — all four entries at the Centennial Regional are from the area — and a second could advance if top-seeded Mahomet-Seymour prevails at the Eisenhower Regional. Champaign schools Central and Centennial are the top seeds in the local regional. Each has players who can put the ball in the net, but each is probably strongest on defense, so goals could be at a premium. Central is vastly improved over 2011, and Centennial is not quite as strong as the teams that won 35 games the previous two seasons. Regulation may not be enough time to determine a winner. M-S, meanwhile, is closing in on its school record for wins in a season (14) and hopes to be in a sectional semifinal against the Centennial Regional winner.
