This is a list of search firm expenses at all the University of Illinois' campuses, starting with the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2004.
It includes expenses broken down by year and by search firm.
For the period, the university has spent a total of more than $5.6 million in searches that included coaches, presidents and chancellors, among others.
The biggest single year was fiscal 2008, when search firm expenses topped $1 million. Other highlights:
— In 2005, the UI named Provost Richard Herman as chancellor for the Urbana campus. Herman had been interim chancellor. Korn/Ferry International handled that search and was paid $128,662. He resigned in 2009 in the wake of the Category I admissions scandal.
— In 2005, the UI hired Provost Linda Katehi from Purdue University after conducting a search with the help of Greenwood/Asher, which received $128,662. Katehi left in 2009 to become chancellor at the University of California-Davis.
— 2008 was a big year for firms working with the UI, as several searches were under way, including for the law and business deans. The combined bill to the two firms — Baker & Associates and Greenwood/Asher — that helped fill those positions was around $390,000, plus $37,508 for expenses.
— In late 2009, the Urbana campus suspended its search for a provost to replace Katehi. At the time, Robert Easter was interim provost, but he later was asked to be interim chancellor after Herman resigned. Richard Wheeler later stepped into the interim provost role. After Phyllis Wise assumed her post as Urbana chancellor last fall, the provost search launched again. Isaacson, Miller was paid $90,000 for the new search, which concluded last week with the appointment of UI engineering Dean Ilesanmi "Ade" Adesida. That's on top of the $142,000 paid to Greenwood/Asher for the suspended search in 2009.
— In 2010, the UI hired Michael Hogan after conducting a $303,000 search, with help from Isaacson, Miller, which received about $160,000. About $314,000 was spent to hire the previous president, B. Joseph White, who started in February 2005. The consultants for that search received $143,000. White resigned in 2009 amid the admissions scandal.
