An intro to area parks

Local park districts cater to canines.

In June 2009, the Champaign Park District opened its 7-acre dog park, called the Champaign Bark District, and this June, Danville opened its 5-acre FETCH dog park.

The two cities join Urbana, which already had a 10-acre dog park just off Perkins Road, east of Cunningham Avenue. At the Urbana park, annual membership is $38 for a dog owner who lives in Champaign, Urbana or Rantoul, and $76 for all others. The fee for one dog is included in the membership, and it’s $6 a year more for each additional dog. Dogs must have proper shots, a county registration tag and dog park tag. For information, visit

The  Champaign dog park is near the southeast corner of Windsor and Rising Roads and has separate areas for large and small dogs. Membership applications can be found online at For memberships, dog owners must provide a current county registration tag, and proof of vaccinations for rabies, distemper, kennel cough, para-influenza, parvovirus and a fecal test for internal parasites. Memberships are $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents for a single dog and each additional dog is $6.

In Danville, the dog park is located at Espenscheid Park, turn north onto North Kimball Street in the 800 block of East Voorhees Street. That facility also has separate areas for small and large dogs. Pets must have their rabies shots and local city registration tag, if the owner is a Danville resident. Annual dog park tags are $10.
