Area Correspondents

The News-Gazette editorial department is striving to improve and increase its coverage of the communities outside Champaign-Urbana, so we've hired a dozen or more correspondents who will call us and send us news from their towns. The correspondents or "stringers" as they are sometimes called, typically cover the village boards and school boards in their towns, and also provide us with breaking news and keep us apprised of issues and concerns.

If you live in one of our area communities and you would like to put some news in the paper, you can contact the correspondent in your area. Or you can call the regional desk any time between 7:30 a.m. and midnight with story suggestions, tips for breaking news or questions. We count on our correspondents to keep us in touch with the people in our rural areas. And even more than that, we count on our readers to let us know what kinds of stories they'd like to see about the people and events in their towns.

We have an ongoing search for additional correspondents in our coverage area. If you are interested in writing or learning how to write, have an interest in your community and have some evenings free to attend meetings, we would like to talk to you. We can cover expenses and pay enough that you might be enticed to do more writing for us. To apply, contact Rebecca Mabry, the regional editor at (217) 351-5638. The toll-free number is 1-800-252-3346; ask for Extension 638.
