City of Champaign Township: Tax voted down

CHAMPAIGN – City of Champaign Township will continue to provide only minimal services to the extremely poor in the wake of Tuesday's defeat of a proposed tax rate increase.

The township, which covers most of Champaign, had asked for a 2-cent increase in the district's property tax rate, from the current 3.5 cents to 5.5 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. It was being defeated by roughly a two-to-one margin late Tuesday.

Vermilion County auditor: Anstey re-elected

DANVILLE – The next four years for Linda Lucas Anstey will be her last as county auditor.

With 80 of 93 precincts reporting, Anstey won another term Tuesday night, beating opponent Stephen Green by more than 2,200 votes, according to unofficial results.

Champaign County circuit clerk: Frank gets 5th term

URBANA – It appears incumbent Champaign County Circuit Clerk Linda Frank will keep her job.

With all but a few precincts reporting, Frank, a Republican, beat Democratic challenger Kim Hooper by about 7,700 votes. Frank won about 41,000 votes, while Hooper garnered about 33,300.

DANVILLE – Dennis "Denny" Gardner looks forward to taking over on Dec. 1 as the county's new circuit clerk, and all he wants is a chance to prove himself.

Vermilion County coroner: Johnson re-elected

DANVILLE – It was a happy birthday for Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson.

With 80 of 93 precincts posting, Johnson, who turned 56 on Tuesday, won another term Tuesday night, beating opponent Mike Rortvedt by more than 6,100 votes, according to unofficial results.

Dems retain 15-12 majority

URBANA – While Democrats were sweeping national offices, the status quo remains on the Champaign County Board, with Barack Obama's party retaining its 15-12 majority.

Green Party candidates who had attended county board and nursing home advisory committee meetings were shut out at the county level.

Vermilion County Board: One new member

DANVILLE – Vermilion County voters returned all the incumbents to the county board Tuesday, so several familiar faces will be sworn in on Dec. 1 when the new board will meet for the first time and elect a chairman.

Two of the county board's longest-serving members, Ivadale Foster, D-District 8, and Robert Fox, R-District 6, were two of the 14 incumbents who retained their seats on the 27-member board.

15th District: Johnson wins easily

East Central Illinois residents overwhelmingly voted Tuesday night to send Republican Tim Johnson back to Washington for a fifth term in Congress.

Johnson led challenger Steve Cox, D-Urbana, 175,801, or 66 percent, to 92,348, or 34 percent, with 94 percent of precincts reporting.

Champaign County state's attorney: Rietz re-elected

URBANA – Champaign County States Attorney Julia Rietz on Tuesday won a second term as Champaign County state's attorney.

 

With all but a couple precincts reporting, Rietz led Republican challenger Janie Miller-Jones of Rantoul 49,225 to 26,207.
