NJCAA men's basketball roundup: Kirkwood, Johnson County to meet in title game

DANVILLE — Top-seeded Kirkwood continued its march towards an NJCAA Division II men's basketball national title with an impressive 84-70 win against Erie (N.Y.) on Friday night.

The semifinal victory by the community college from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at Mary Miller Gym on the campus of Danville Area Community College advanced the Eagles (30-4) into the national championship game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Kirkwood will face No. 2 Johnson County (31-4) in the title game after the Kansas school beat 14th-seeded Cecil (Md.) 81-78 in overtime late Friday night in the other semifinal game.

Douglas Wilson dropped in a game-high 27 points to carry Kirkwood, while Allante Pickens sank 5 of 7 three-pointers en route to 17 points and Luke Appel chipped in with 10 points.

Fourth-seeded Erie (27-5) trailed 50-29 at halftime in a game it never led. Kyle Harris scored a team-high 18 points for the Kats.

Blazers still playing. John Wood will play for fifth place at 2 p.m. on Saturday after its 72-63 win against Lakeland (Ohio) on Friday.

Cory Miller Jr. finished with 19 points and eight rebounds to spark the 11th-seeded Blazers (21-14).

John Dawson led Lakeland (26-8) with 17 points.

Milwaukee moves on. Paced by a double-double from Yuri Swinford, fifth-seeded Milwaukee Area Tech defeated Niagara County (N.Y.) 76-73 on Friday in a fifth-place semifinal game.

Swinford (19 points, 11 rebounds) and D'Angelo Young-Pryor (game-high 20 points) led Milwaukee Area (30-6). William Kondrat scored 15 points to lead Niagara County (27-10).

Pima wins in rout. Third-seeded Pima (Ariz.) easily defeated Pitt (N.C.) 105-73 in a seventh-place semifinal game on Friday.

Kennedy Koehler kept up his strong tournament with a game-high 22 points for the Aztecs (28-7).

Rovel Ray led Pitt (24-10) with 10 points.

Ancilla advances. Ty'Sean Sheppard scored a game-high 23 points to lead Ancilla (Ind.) to a 95-87 win against North Central Missouri on Friday in a seventh-place semifinal game.

The 12th-seeded Chargers (24-10) also received solid contributions from Mike Green (17 points), Albert Haskins (15 points, eight rebounds) and Nathan Meriweather (11 points).
