Badgers halt Illini softball

MADISON, Wis. — After a cold and snowy forecast forced a schedule change, the Illinois softball team dropped both games in Thursday's rescheduled doubleheader at Wisconsin, falling 4-2 and then 6-2 as the Badgers clinched the series at Goodman Diamond Complex.

Illinois fell behind early in the first game after Wisconsin scored two runs in the opening frame, adding two more in the fourth inning. The loss snapped the Illini's modest three-game winning streak.

The Badgers wasted little time in the second game, homering on Illini starting pitcher Emily Oestreich's fourth pitch. Oestreich was pulled without recording an out.

The Illini (25-15, 6-6 Big Ten) got out of the inning without any further damage, but they were unable to stop the bleeding as the Badgers (18-16, 4-5) plated another five unanswered runs and cruised to victory.

"In my experience you miss 100 percent of the pitches you do not swing at," coach Tyra Perry said after Illinois combined for six hits across the two games. "We are a top hitting team because we swing our bats and make adjustments. We did not do that today in either game."
