Report: Kane not with Illini this summer

CHAMPAIGN — Not much was known about Samba Kane when he committed to Illinois on March 9.

Other than the fact he stood 7 feet tall and would bring some added size to the Illini men's basketball team when he arrived on campus this summer.

Kane is still listed as being on the Illinois roster, but those summer plans appear to be on hold.

According to a report from 247sports on Friday morning, Kane has left the program this summer after dealing with transcript issues and being unable to enroll in summer school. Kane plans to return in August to begin taking classes for the fall semester.

The Senegal native signed with Illinois on April 11 after playing at Florida Prep Academy in Melbourne, Fla., this past season, where he averaged 9.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocks.

Illinois team spokesman Derrick Burson would not immediately confirm the report when reached on Friday morning.

Kane was part of a six-man class that coach Brad Underwood signed, and he figured to have a prominent role for the 2018-19 season given the rash of frontcourt departures that have hit Illinois since the 2017-18 season ended.

Leron Black, last year's leading scorer, announced plans to turn pro in mid-March, Michael Finke announced in late March he was transferring before he ultimately picked Grand Canyon and Greg Eboigbodin announced last week he planned to transfer after only one season with the Illini.

Kane's absence leaves Illinois with only nine scholarship players this summer and only two — incoming freshmen Giorgi Bezhanishvili and Tevian Jones — taller than 6-6. Bezhanishvili checks in at 6-9, with Jones at 6-7, but Jones is more of a wing player.
