Early signing period: Who's left for Illini?

Early signing period: Who's left for Illini?

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois' recruiting options are narrowing with the early signing period starting in less than a month and running from Nov. 14-21.

At this time last year the Illini had secured a commitment from five-star guard Ayo Dosunmu, who wound up being the only player Brad Underwood signed last November as the first of what eventually became six freshmen signees in 2018. Illinois' 2019 recruitment is behind even that.

The Illini lost out on five-star center Oscar Tshiebwe and four-star forward Anthony Walker III, as those now former Illinois targets committed to West Virginia and Miami, respectively. An indefinite delay to Terrence Shannon's commitment date casts some doubt on the wing, where the Illini are also waiting on a decision from Quincy Guerrier.

What was once a list of recruiting targets numbering more than 50 is now just more than a dozen potential prospects. At the top of that list is five-star forward Drew Timme, who made his official visit to Champaign this past weekend.

Fellow big men Kofi Cockburn, Jason Jitoboh and Tre Mitchell are still available. The situation on the wing beyond the potential of a Guerrier or Shannon commitment is quite a bit murkier. The longer Illinois goes without a 2019 commit, the likelier the Illini's next class is built by players not even on the Illini recruiting board yet.
