Illini Basketball Report Card: vs. Evansville, Nov. 8, 2018

Player of the game:

Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu

Was it everything Illini fans wanted from the moment the former Chicago Public League star committed last October? Pretty much. Dosunmu’s Illinois debut saw him finish with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Backcourt

Illinois: A

Evansville: D

The Illini guards are going to be the strength of this team all year long, so might as well get that going in the season opener. Trent Frazier’s 10 points to go with seven assists and — most importantly — zero turnovers was key.

Frontcourt

Illinois: A

Evansville: D-

Giorgi Bezhanishvili is about the only true frontcourt player for the Illini. That he led led the team with 10 rebounds was a significant improvement from the exhibition game. Kipper Nichols getting back on track offensively helped, too.

Bench

Illinois: A

Evansville: F

Andres Feliz stands out more in the box score with 18 points, three assists and three rebounds, but don’t shortchange Da’Monte Williams. Doing all the little things, like taking charges and playing steady defense, go under the radar.

Overall

Illinois: A

Evansville: D-

The Purple Aces were picked to finish last in the Missouri Valley Conference for a reason. It showed Thursday night at State Farm Center. That said, the Illini’s defensive pressure and shooting would work against about anybody.
