Illini Basketball Report Card: vs. Ohio State, Dec. 5, 2018

Player of the game:

Ohio State guard Keyshawn Woods

While Illinois' duo of Trent Frazier and Kipper Nichols matched Woods' game-high 18-point effort, the Buckeyes' fifth-year guard got his on 60 percent shooting from the field and perfect 5 of 5 free throw shooting (all of which came in the second half).

Backcourt

Ohio State: B

The Illini guards bothered Ohio State's into a slew of early turnovers and then actually took advantage of those extra opportunities. At least for a time. But slowing down Woods for the entire game proved less fruitful, while the Buckeyes had similar trouble with Frazier.

Frontcourt

Ohio State: B-

Giorgi Bezhanishvili had five points, five rebounds and five fouls in 19 minutes, fouling out for the third straight game. And it got to the point where the Illini couldn't sub in Adonis De La Rosa in his place because he simply couldn't stop Ohio State big man Kaleb Wesson. Only Nichols keeps Illinois from a failing grade.

Bench

Illinois: D-

Ohio State: A-

Nichols in the starting lineup robbed the Illini of what was an important piece off the bench in their Big Ten opener at Nebraska. The Buckeyes wound up with a 40-15 advantage in bench points, as Illinois got just seven points from Da'Monte Williams on 2 of 8 shooting.

Overall

Illinois: C-

Ohio State: B

The Illini's first Big Ten win was there for the taking, and it would have been a signature win of the season, too, given Ohio State's Top 25 ranking. But a 26-12 Buckeyes run in a nine-minute stretch of the second half saw their lead grow to as many as 13 before they fended off a late Illinois charge.
