Illini Basketball Report Card: vs. Minnesota, Jan. 16, 2019

Player of the game

Illinois freshman guard Ayo Dosunmu

The Illini freshman’s cup runneth over with confidence. Dosunmu’s elite level play continued Wednesday night against the Gophers, as he drove the early lead and finished with 23 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Backcourt

Minnesota: D-

Can’t find much fault in anything any of the Illini did against the Gophers. Dosunmu might have led the way again, but Trent Frazier and Aaron Jordan both found their shooting stroke to balance out the offense.

Frontcourt

Illinois: A

Minnesota: D

The key numbers here? Giorgi Bezhanishvili provided a steady second option on the block with 20 points, and the Illini had a 39-26 advantage on the boards against one of the top rebounding teams in the Big Ten.

Bench

Illinois: A

Minnesota: D-

Brad Underwood went to his bench early, but the Illini reserves delivered. Tevian Jones and Samba Kane provided good energy, while Feliz had his best game in a month with 10 points while causing havoc defensively.

Overall

Illinois: A

Minnesota: D-

The Illini have been trying to put a complete game together, well, all season long. Even their other wins weren’t quite as sharp as the beating they put on the Gophers in front of a small, but excited State Farm Center crowd.
