Illini Basketball Report Card: at Iowa, Jan. 20, 2019

Player of the game | Iowa guard Joe Wieskamp

Illinois leaving the Hawkeyes' freshman open at the three-point line — repeatedly — turned out to be a mistake. Wieskamp didn't miss a single shot he took all afternoon, going 8 of 8 from the field overall, 6 of 6 from three-point range and 2 of 2 at the free throw line for his 24 points.

Backcourt

Illinois: D

Iowa: A+

Trent Frazier and Ayo Dosunmu just traded off who would do the scoring in each half, with Frazier getting things started. The Hawkeyes' guards? They were productive in both quarters. Really productive.

Frontcourt

Iowa: A

The Illini might have gotten 11 points out of Giorgi Bezhanishvili, but he had nearly as many turnovers (six) as rebounds (seven). That's an issue. Samba Kane, though, showed some flashes with three blocks.

Bench

Illinois: C+

Iowa: C-

Kane was solid defensively — and about the only Illini big to slow down Luka Garza. Aaron Jordan got some shots to fall and had 11 points before fouling out. The bench was productive. Iowa's starters were more so.

Overall

Illinois: D

Iowa: A

If beating Minnesota by 27 was several giant steps forward for the Illini, losing by 24 at Iowa — particularly with the defensive struggles — was those same giant steps but just in the other direction.
