Illini Basketball Report Card: at Ohio State, Feb. 14, 2019

Player of the game

Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu

The Illini freshman might have missed a wide open layup late in the game, but he made up for it with another dagger three-pointer in what's turning out to be a month full of them. Dosunmu's clutch shot pushed him to 15 points for the game to go with four rebounds and three assists.

Trent Frazier got the Illini going early, with 10 of his 15 points coming in the first half, and for a while his three-point shooting was all Illinois was getting from beyond the arc. Ohio State's C.J. Jackson might have had a game-high 17 points, but he also led everyone with seven turnovers, too.

No, Giorgi Bezhanishvili didn't match his offensive production from the Illini's win against Rutgers, but the freshman forward did have 13 points, seven rebounds and a career-high four blocks. Foul trouble kept the Buckeyes' Kaleb Wesson from a consistent night, and he had just 10 points.

Bench

Illinois: B-

Both teams' starters carried the heaviest offensive load, but Illinois gets the edge here because of Andres Feliz and Alan Griffin. The former snapped the Illini's second-half scoring drought and fouled out Wesson. The latter might have struggled offensively, but rebounded and defended.

Overall

Illinois: B

Every team tries to play its best basketball in the final month-plus of the season. The Illini are actually doing it with their first four-game Big Ten winning streak since the Malcolm Hill-led 2016-17 season. Illinois' path doesn't get any easier with road games at Wisconsin and Purdue in two of the next three games, but the Illini have shown an ability not only to compete, but to close, this month.
