Illini roster: Who's in, who's out?

CHAMPAIGN — April is a busy month for college basketball now that the sport has become a yearlong venture, and the Final Four and national championship game is only a small part of that.

The early signing period starts in April — this week, in fact, on Wednesday — as recruiting classes are filled. Future recruiting also kicks back into high gear. The first evaluation period runs the final weekend of the month in the new recruiting calendar. And the steady stream of transfers in and out of programs continues, too.

This April is an important one for Illinois after not signing any 2019 prospects in November. Four-star center Kofi Cockburn, fresh off his second Nike Hoop Summit, and unranked power forward Bernard Kouma can officially join the Illini starting Wednesday. The latter doing so would make a similar move by Antwan January seem considerably less likely.

Illinois hosted another 2019 prospect for an official visit this past weekend in three-star forward Olivier Robinson-Nkamhoua. The 6-foot-8, 210-pound Finnish native would potentially add both size and athleticism to the Illini frontcourt in need of just that.

The pursuit of Robinson-Nkamhoua, of course, creates questions about graduate transfer T.J. Holyfield. Is the 2019 forward insurance in case Holyfield goes elsewhere? The now former Stephen F. Austin standout will make an official visit to Illinois this spring, but Champaign isn't the only college basketball town he's visiting. Kansas, Oregon, Miami and Texas Tech all made the cut, too.

The 2019-20 Illinois roster currently stands incomplete, but the rest of this month could provide some clarity. One thing Illini coach Brad Underwood isn't wanting for, though, is options.
