Saturday's UI roundup: Quinn reaches 2 event finals

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Devin Quinn added to his Sunday race schedule at the Big Ten track and field outdoor championships in Iowa City, Iowa, by punching his ticket into another event final.

The Illinois senior sprinter won his heat in the 100-meter dash preliminaries on Saturday to clinch a spot in today’s final. Quinn’s clocking of 10.36 seconds was also the second-fastest time in the 100 prelims. Quinn will race in the 100 final at 1:50 p.m. today before switching gears to the 200 final at 2:35 p.m.

Competing in her only event at the Big Ten women’s outdoor meet, Chisom Nwoko notched a place in the 400-meter finals on Saturday afternoon. Nwoko placed eighth in the 400 prelims with a time of 54.86 seconds, and the Illini junior will be back on track at 1:45 p.m. today for the final.

Illinois sophomore Kristin Slaughter also earned the first conference outdoor podium finish of her career, tying for eighth place in the women’s pole vault on Saturday. Slaughter’s mark of 3.87 meters (12 feet, 8 ¼ inches) was a personal best.

Also in field events, Janile Rogers placed fifth in the women’s long jump at 6.13 meters (20-1 ½), while Briana Driver was seventh in the event at 5.94 meters (19-6).
