Three gymnasts earn league honors
MINNEAPOLIS – Illinois seniors Allison Buckley and Melissa Fernandez were named first-team All-Big Ten by the league's coaches, and junior Kelsey Joannides earned second-team honors Friday.
"It shows that we are continuing to be a force in the Big Ten," UI interim coach Kim Landrus said. "Having three All-Big Ten selections is not only a great accomplishment for those gymnasts but representative of the strength of our whole team."
Fresno State 3, Illinois 2. Danielle Zymkowitz, Meredith Hackett and Jackie Guy each had one hit at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.
"Our offense needs to catch fire early, and we are confident it will," Illini coach Terri Sullivan said.
NIU 15, Illinois 14. Brandon Hohl, Willie Argo and Davis Hendrickson homered for the Illini in Carbondale. Illinois (4-10) scored 13 runs in the last seven innings against Northern Illinois.
"We swung the bats better today and we didn't beat ourselves by walking a lot of guys, but we weren't locating our pitches very well," UI coach Dan Hartleb said. "We aren't doing the things it takes to win right now. We're playing extremely hard and we're so close in a lot of areas, but we aren't doing the little things it takes to be successful."
Argo (two runs, three stolen bases) went 2 for 4.
