CARSON, Calif. — Illinois women's soccer player Vanessa DiBernardo was among 24 collegiate players selected to participate in the U.S. Under-23 National Team Training Camp.

The camp began Sunday and continues through May 1.

DiBernardo led the Big Ten in goals (11), points (27), goals per game (0.59) and points per game (1.62) last season. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year scored at least one goal in seven matches and recorded the game-winning goal in four.

Aide moves on. Henry Zapata, a volunteer assistant coach on the Illini women's soccer staff, was hired as an assistant coach at College of Charleston. Zapata will serve as goalkeeper coach for Charleston head coach Christian Michner, a former Illini assistant.

Over the past four years, Zapata also was a member of the Little Illini Soccer Club coaching staff.

In men's golf:

Big Ten honors Guthrie. Illini junior Luke Guthrie, who tied for medalist honors at the Kepler Intercollegiate last weekend, is the Big Ten Men's Co-Golfer of the Week.

The conference announced Guthrie's selection Wednesday. He shared the award with Purdue freshman Adam Schenk.

Guthrie won the second tournament title of his college career, shooting a 3-under-par 210 at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. Guthrie sank a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole to tie Kent State's John Hahn for first place.

The weekly award is Guthrie's third this season.

In women's gymnastics:

Illini sign Junior Olympian. Asahi "Sunny" Kato signed a national letter of intent. The Chino Hills, Calif., native is a two-time Junior Olympic Level 10 national qualifier. In 2007, Kato was a JO Level 10 national champion in the Junior B uneven parallel bars

The Newport Harbor (Calif.) High School senior is the fourth member of the UI recruiting class for next season, joining fall signees Kelsi Eberly of Landisville, Pa., Nikki McGarel of Naperville and Jordan Naleway of Vernon Hills.

In baseball:

Game canceled. Wednesday night's baseball game between the Illini and Bradley at Illinois Field was canceled because of impending storms in the Champaign-Urbana area. The game will not be rescheduled because of the lack of a common open date in the remaining schedules.

In softball:

Games postponed. Wednesday's softball doubleheader between Illinois and Indiana at Eichelberger Field was postponed because of inclement weather. The Big Ten games are scheduled to be played Thursday beginning at noon.
