Northwestern stuns Illinois in soccer

CHAMPAIGN — Midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo scored on a penalty kick to give Illinois a 1-0 lead, but Northwestern staged a dramatic comeback Thursday night in the Big Ten soccer match.
The Wildcats’ Georgia Waddle tied the match with nine minutes left and Kate Allen converted a penalty kick with four seconds left to give Northwestern a 2-1 victory.
“I thought tonight’s game was a great example of why you keep playing until the end,” Wildcats coach Michael Moynihan said.

Women’s tennis players advance. Misia Kedzierski and Audrey O’Connor of Illinois each went 1-0 in the qualifying round of singles on the opening day of the ITA Midwest Regional at Atkins Tennis Center.
After receiving a first-round bye, Kedzierski defeated Eastern Illinois’ Sephora Boulbahaiem 6-3, 6-4. O’Connor, who also had a bye into the second round, outbattled Merritt Whitley of EIU 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Both Illini advanced to today’s third and final round of qualifying.

Freshman moves on. Illini freshman Julian Childers advanced to the third qualifying round of the ITA Midwest Regional in East Lansing, Mich., with two straight-set victories.

Baseball duo honored. Illini sophomores Josh Ferry and Will Krug were selected to the Chicago Suburban Baseball League’s All-College team, the league announced Thursday.
Right-hander Ferry went 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA for the Lombard Orioles this summer, and Krug hit .375 and stole 55 bases for the Crystal Lake Cardinals.
