PARK RIDGE — Vanessa DiBernardo was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week in women’s soccer Monday after leading Illinois to its first victory ever at Michigan.
The junior midfielder scored two goals, including on a penalty kick in overtime that lifted the Illini to a 3-2 victory against the No. 24 Wolverines on Saturday at Ann Arbor, Mich. DiBernardo also had an assist on Illinois’ second goal, which tied the score at 2-2.
DiBernardo has eight goals this season, including two game-winners, and is now tied with Tara Hurless (2001-04) for the school record for Big Ten career goals with 20.
Women’s golf team stumbles. The Illini women’s golf team fell to last place in the 15-team Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at Austin, Texas, after shooting a 317 in the second round Tuesday.
Illinois enters today’s final round with a 629 total — 56 strokes behind co-leaders Florida and Alabama. Ember Schuldt shot the Illini’s best round of the day, a 4-over-par 76, and is tied for 57th place at 154. Illinois’ Pimploy Thirati also is tied for 57th.
Baseball team to visit Baylor. The Illini baseball team will play 14 games next season against teams that competed in the 2012 NCAA tournament.
Illinois announced its 2013 schedule on Monday, a lineup highlighted by a three-game series March 8-10 at Baylor, which reached the NCAA super regionals last June.
The Illini are scheduled to open the season Feb. 15 at Tennessee Tech. Illinois’ home and Big Ten opener is set for March 22 against Nebraska in what will be the Cornhuskers’ first trip to Champaign since 1905.
