Pieters paces UI golfers

LAFAYETTE, La. — Thomas Pieters carded a 4-under-par 68, leading No. 19 Illinois to an 8-stroke victory Tuesday at the 28th annual Louisiana Classics.

The Illini, who won the golf tournament for the second time in three years, had a final-round 287 and totaled 866.

Pieters tied for fifth after starting 20th Tuesday.

“It was a solid tournament,” UI coach Mike Small said. “We put up some good scores on a course that wasn’t easy.”

In baseball:

Team adds player. Pat McInerney, who attends Benet Academy, was added to Illinois’ Class of 2013, baseball coach Dan Hartleb said Tuesday.

McInerney, a first baseman and outfielder, will join the Illini in the 2013-14 academic year.
