CARBONDALE — Senior Kevin Johnson moved into fourth place on Illinois’ career innings-pitched list, leading the Illini to a 4-1 nonconference baseball victory against Southern Illinois on Friday.
Johnson fanned four and limited SIU to seven hits in eight scoreless innings.
“Kevin Johnson did an outstanding job today,” UI coach Dan Hartleb said.
“He got out of two different jams and was in command of his pitches all day. He really competed well and kept the ball down in the zone.”
Johnson now has tossed 299 2/3 innings and passed Danville product Jason Anderson on the school’s career list.
Illini sweep. Remeny Perez homered, leading Illinois to a 6-2 victory against Western Michigan on Friday at the Fighting Illini Invitational.
Shelese Arnold earned the win for Illinois (9-12).
In the UI’s tourney opener, Pepper Gay and Jackie Guy scattered eight hits, leading Illinois to a 3-2 victory against Loyola.
In women’s golf:
Schuldt paces squad. Ember Schuldt carded a 75 and was tied for 16th place after the first round of the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate at Augusta, Ga.
The Illini were 13th in the 18-team field, totaling 319. Vanderbilt was first at 290.
In swimming & diving:
Divers don’t advance. UI seniors Keri Eberhardt and Darragh McDermott and sophomore Erika Murphy did not qualify for the NCAA Championships in the NCAA Zone C Championships on Friday in West Lafayette, Ind.
