Baseball ends Hoosiers' 18-game run

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — In his first college start, Ryan Castellanos took down mighty Indiana on Sunday.

The freshman pitched six solid innings as the Illini beat No. 16 Indiana 3-2 to avoid a sweep while snapping the Hoosiers’ NCAA-leading 18-game winning streak.

Tyler Jay and Bryan Roberts combined for three innings of scoreless relief.

Justin Parr was 4 for 4 with a home run and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

“Ryan was outstanding in his first collegiate start,” Illini coach Dan Hartleb said. “He was very calm out on the mound and threw three pitches for a strike. Tyler Jay and Bryan Roberts came in from the bullpen and got the job done and Justin Parr was excellent at the plate to get us a good team win.”

Men’s tennis tops Spartans. Jared Hiltzik, Stephen Hoh and Farris Gosea won singles matches, and the Illini men’s tennis team won its third straight doubles point to knock off Michigan State 4-3 on Sunday in East Lansing, Mich.

Women’s tennis cruises. Allison Falkin won 6-0, 6-1 to power the Illini women’s tennis team’s to a dominating 6-1 victory against visiting Michigan State. Melissa Kopinski, Rachael White, Misia Kedzierski and Julia Jamieson also were victorious for the 54th-ranked Illini.

Softball swept. The Illinois softball team held a one-run lead against Northwestern, but the Wildcats woke up for a 7-1 victory and series sweep, sending the Illini to their ninth loss in 10 games.

Freshman paces golfers. Thomas Detry finished 16th — his third straight top-20 finish of his freshman season — as the Illini rallied to finish 12th at the Augusta State Invitational.
