Big Ten honors Duchene

PARK RIDGE — Illinois left-hander Kevin Duchene, who threw a two-hit shutout last weekend, was honored twice by the Big Ten on Monday.

The Joliet native was selected Co-Pitcher of the Week and Freshman of the Week in baseball by the conference. Duchene took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and struck out 11 batters in the Illini’s 9-0 victory against Penn State on Friday at Illinois Field.

The strikeout total was the most by an Illini pitcher this season, and Duchene joined senior right-hander Kevin Johnson as the only members of the UI staff to pitch a complete-game shutout in 2013.

Duchene (7-1) shared the Pitcher of the Week award with Northwestern sophomore left-hander Brandon Magallones.
