Illini golf reaches Final Four

Mike Small's Illini are in the Final Four.

Wins by Thomas Detry, Charlie Danielson and Alex Burge gave the Illini a 3-2 win against defending NCAA champion Texas in today's quarterfinals in the match-play portion of the tournament in Milton, Ga.

The win assures Illinois of its best finish in school history, topping the 1941 team that finished fourth. Saturday's semifinal losers will  finish tied for third.

"This is huge, we made history," said freshman Charlie Danielson, who won his match — and effectively sealed the UI's win — with a clutch 20-foot putt on No. 18.

On top Saturday: Top-seeded Cal, which dispatched Arizona State 3-2.

"Starting tomorrow, rankings don't matter," said UI sophomore and former Bloomington star Alex Burge, who won 3 & 2 to officially wrap it up.
