Who's behind this adolescent smugness of assigning the teams grades? It never failed to be irritating in its ankle-biting attitude during the men's basketball season.

How about grades for the NG sports coverage?  Hmmm...

Self-effacement: D

In depth articles: A-

Weekly Web Chats: A+ These are outstanding

Loyalty and support for the Illini: D+. If Loren was a judge, they'd call him Hangman. Too critical. A great critic, like Roger Ebert, is one that actually loves what they are writing about. Got the feeling too often not enough love for the Illini.

Interesting back stories: B (have to give the A in that class to Rob McColley over at Smile Politely)

Effort to cover the remarkable amount of college and prep sports here: A

Loyalty and support are for the Sports Information Department, not the local newspaper. Ebert loved film in general; a good critic isn't predisposed to love any particular film or restaurant or performance before he experiences it.

Agree, but I want the NG sports department to love the Illini! Predisposed love is also known as loyalty.
