Wrestlers split matches
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Illinois’ Jesse Delgado (125 pounds) and Jackson Morse (165) won both of their matchups Sunday, but the 15th-ranked Illini split their matches at the NWCA National Duals.
Illinois lost 19-13 to Central Michigan in the first round but defeated Bloomsburg 23-8 in the first consolation round.
“We let three swing matches get away against Central Michigan,” UI coach Jim Heffernan said. “Two by one point, and another in overtime. That’s really what decided the dual. We rebounded and wrestled well enough to win against Bloomsburg.”
Baseball team falls late. UI starter Drasen Johnson had a career-high 10 strikeouts and the Illini reclaimed the lead with a five-run sixth inning, but the bullpen couldn’t hold it against Georgia State in Atlanta.
Illinois (1-2) lost the series finale 10-6.
Softball team loses heartbreaker. Host South Florida defeated Illinois’ softball team 2-1 after the Bulls scored on a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Illini, who lost 10-0 against top-ranked Tennessee late Saturday, dropped to 8-2.
Guignon shines in defeat. Ross Guignon won his singles and doubles matches, but No. 22 Illinois lost 4-2 to No. 8 Texas A&M in men’s tennis at Houston.
