Booker hits for cycle in softball victory
ARLINGTON, Texas — Left fielder Alex Booker became the first Illini softball player to hit for the cycle, leading Illinois to a 9-1 victory against Creighton on Sunday.
Illinois (11-3) concluded the UTA Hilton Invitational with a 4-2 victory against Texas-Arlington.
Booker finished the day with five hits, five RBI and three runs.
Gymnasts climb charts. The 14th-ranked Illini women’s gymnastics team posted its second-best score in program history, recording a 196.775 to defeat 19th-ranked Central Michigan (196.425) and 23rd-ranked Ohio State (195.925) at Huff Hall.
Baseball team blanked. Illinois’ baseball team (2-4) drew eight walks but only recorded three hits in a 6-0 loss to Connecticut at the Caravelle Resort’s Baseball at the Beach Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Illini stranded 10 men on base, and they went 1-2 for the second consecutive weekend.
“We didn’t play very well in any aspect,” UI coach Dan Hartleb said. “We weren’t fundamentally sound defensively, and our approach at the plate was not good. We did not swing the bats well this weekend, so it was a role reversal from last week. The things that we’ve worked on all year, we didn’t take to the field.”
Miller sets pace for golfers. Illinois’ Stephanie Miller was tied for sixth place at 3-under-par 141 after two rounds of the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz.
The Illini were tied for ninth place (585) in the 14-team field.
Tennis team victorious. The UI women’s tennis team defeated Oklahoma State 4-2 at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala.
