CHAMPAIGN — Sophomore Jason Goldstein went 4 for 4 with three RBI, leading Illinois to a 6-1 nonconference baseball victory against Illinois State on Wednesday.
Sophomore J.D. Nielsen earned his first career win, tossing two scoreless innings in relief.
The Illini (12-10) won their fourth consecutive game.
“(Wednesday) was a really good win,” UI coach Dan Hartleb said. “Illinois State (15-7) is a very good club. I was really pleased with everything.”
Needham helps squad earn split. Freshman Brandi Needham tossed a fiver-hitter, leading Illinois to a 3-0 nonconference softball victory against Missouri in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday in St. Charles, Mo.
The Illini (16-10) dropped the second game 9-6 against the Tigers (23-8).
“We played a very complete game in the first one (Wednesday),” UI coach Terri Sullivan said. “I was most impressed with the mental side of our game. We were highly focused pitch by pitch, composed, and showed a toughness needed at this point in the season. Brandi was outstanding, and our defense was sound.”
