Big Ten honors freshman Roper

ROSEMONT — Illinois third baseman Ryne Roper, who batted .417 and drove in three runs last weekend in a three-game series sweep at Penn State, was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week in baseball.

The conference announced the honor Monday.

Roper went 5 for 12 with a double and scored three runs against the Nittany Lions, raising his Big Ten batting average to .340.

The weekly league award was the first of the Harrisburg native’s career.
