Missouri snaps baseball's streak
ST. LOUIS — Ryne Roper went 2 for 3, but Illinois lost 5-2 to Missouri on Wednesday night in a nonconference baseball game at Busch Stadium.
The Illini (22-15) had their four-game winning streak snapped.
“This is always a great experience to play at a big league ballpark, but we didn’t get our jobs done (Wednesday night),” UI coach Dan Hartleb said. “We had advantage counts and didn’t put good swings on pitches. We didn’t have a very composed night at the plate. We need to get deeper in counts and get their pitch total up. We made some mistakes and will need to be better on Friday (against Indiana).”
Roper rates another honor. Roper, who was selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday, is this week’s Illinois Scholar-Athlete.
Others nominated this week were baseball player Andrew Mamlic, golfers Thomas Detry and Ember Schuldt, tennis players Jared Hiltzik and Louise Kwong, track and field athlete Cam Viney, gymnast Erin Buchanan and softball player Ruby Rivera.
