UI roundup: Three Illini selected for U.S. volleyball tryouts

CHAMPAIGN — Three Illinois volleyball players will be among the 234 athletes competing at the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryout from March 2-4 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Set to compete are setter Jordyn Poulter, rising opposite Megan Cooney and libero Morgan O’Brien.

Illini coach Chris Tamas is among the coaches selected as evaluators, while former Illinois setter and now Northwestern associate head coach Erin Virtune is on Karch Kiraly’s national team coaching staff. The tryout will be for roster spots on the U.S. National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team program.

Poulter is a veteran of the U.S. Volleyball pipeline. The rising Illini senior won the 2015 U.S. Women’s Junior National Team that won gold at the European Global Challenge in Croatia and also led the U20 U.S. Women’s Junior National Team to a gold at the 2014 NORCECA Championships in Guatemala while earning the Best Setter award. In 2013, Poulter helped the USA Girls Youth National Team win a silver medal at the FIVB World Championships — earning another Best Setter Award — and also played with the U23 Women’s National Team at the FIVB World Championships in Mexico.

Former St. Thomas More standout turned Auburn setter Mica Allison was also among the athletes selected. Before leading the Sabers to the 2017 Class 2A state title, Allison played for Team USA in August at the FIVB U18 World Championships in Argentina.

Yalowitz homers in loss. Jack Yalowitz gave Illinois an early lead with a two-run homer, Bren Spillane was a home run away from the cycle, but the Illini baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision at Coastal Carolina on Friday.

Preseason All-American Kevin Woodall Jr.'s go-ahead two run homer in the eighth inning made the difference for the Chanticleers (5-1).

Illinois dropped to 1-2 on the season.

Women's tennis rallies for win. Yale won the doubles point, but the Illinois women's tennis team recovered and claimed a 4-1 victory in Friday's opening round of the 2018 Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala.

The fifth-ranked Illini (8-1) received singles' wins from Jaclyn Switkes (7-5, 6-1), Emilee Duong (6-0, 6-0), Daniela Pedraza-Novak (6-0, 6-0) and Sasha Belaya (6-0, 6-3).

Oakwood's Davis wins silver medal. The Illinois men's track and field team medaled in three events and five other Illini advanced into the finals during Friday's opening day of Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio.

Jon Davis was the runner-up in the 3,000 meters (8 minutes, 12.28 seconds) while Jacob LaRocca was third in the pole vault (17 feet, 1.75 inches) and the quartet of Garrett Lee, Aaron Harris, Tony Zea and Denis O'Callaghan combined to place third in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:46.12.

Cole Henderson (60-meter), Devin Quinn (60-meter, 200-meter), Joe Haight (400-meter) and David Kendziera (60-meter hurdles) all qualified for today's finals.

On the women's side, Chisom Nwoko (400-meter), Urbana native Nicole Choquette (800-meter), Rebecca Craddock (mile run) and Jayla Stewart (60-meter hurdles) each qualified for the finals, as well.
