UI roundup: Kendziera places 12th in 60-meter hurdles

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — David Kendziera's swan song on the college indoor track circuit ended abruptly.

The redshirt senior placed 12th in the men's 60-meter hurdle semifinals with a time of 7.84 seconds at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, on Friday evening. Only the top eight advanced to tonight's final.

Despite the result, Kendziera, who posted a personal-best qualifying time of 7.69 seconds earlier this season, collected his seventh All-America honor, taking home second-team accolades.

In baseball

Illini crush Spartans. Illinois won its sixth straight game, doing so in dominant fashion by amassing 14 hits en route to a 15-4 victory over Michigan State in Greenville, S.C., on Friday afternoon.

Illinois (7-3) was productive up and down its lineup. Ben Troike had three hits and three walks, Bren Spillane homered and drove in three runs and Michael Massey had three hits along with four RBI.

In men's tennis

UI sweeps Wildcats. Illinois opened Big Ten play in emphatic fashion as the sixth-ranked Illini rolled to a 4-0 sweep at Northwestern on Friday. The Illini (10-4) won all three doubles matches, and Aron Hiltzik, Alex Brown and Caleb Chakravarthi each won in singles.

In softball

Illinois drops doubleheader. Carly Thomas totaled five hits and three RBI on the day, but the Illinois softball team dropped a doubleheader at Mississippi State — 9-5 and 12-1 in five innings — on Friday.
