Hartleb becomes third Illinois coach to win 400

In typical fashion, Dan Hartleb deflected the praise after Sunday's 10-4 win by his Illinois baseball team elsewhere.

"First of all, it's fun, but we've had great players, great assistant coaches, great support from the administration," Hartleb said after earning win No. 400 at Illinois. "It's an honor to be at one place this long and have such good players where you can add up those victories. It's all about the players."

Now in his 13th season leading the Illini — who carry a 23-8 record into today's 6 p.m. home game against Valparaiso — here's a by-the-numbers look at some of Hartleb's historic wins while manning the Illinois dugout:

No. 1

After an 0-3 start in his debut season, the Illini gave Hartleb his first win with a 5-1 victory at South Florida on March 3, 2006. Mattoon natives Ryan Snowden, Kyle Hudson and Ryan Hastings combined for six hits and two RBI in the win.

No. 100

Dominic Altobelli's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled the Illini to a 4-3 win against Akron in the first game of a doubleheader on March 14, 2009 in Champaign.

No. 200

Trailing Illinois State 5-0 early on April 17, 2012 at Illinois Field didn't deter the Illini. Drasen Johnson threw 5 1 / 3 scoreless innings of relief for his first career win and Willie Argo delivered three RBI as Illinois snapped a four-game losing skid.300The memorable 2015 season saw Hartleb hit this milestone during a 17-2 home win against Northwestern. Reid Roper went 5 for 6 with three RBI to pace the Illini in this win, which was their fifth straight in what became a 27-game win streak.

No. 400

Michael Massey's grand slam spurred the Illini to Sunday's home win against Rutgers. Hartleb joins Lee Eilbracht (518 wins from 1952-78) and Itch Jones (474 wins from 1991-2005) as the only Illinois baseball coaches with at least 400 wins.
