Davis, Rabinowitz take top Illini honor

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois men's track and field athlete Jon Davis and Illinois women's tennis player Mia Rabinowitz each won the Illini's Freshman of the Year accolade, announced Wednesday by the Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Votes from Illinois head coaches, DIA executive staff and the DIA athletics awards committee picked the two winners.

Davis, an Oakwood graduate, earned second-team All-American honors in the 3,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships and placed 15th. He also became the 498th American to run a sub-4 minute mile, clocking in at 3 minutes, 58.46 seconds this past season at the Illini Classic.

Rabinowitz earned team MVP honors for the Illini this past season, compiling 28 wins in singles play to rank 10th all-time in program history. She also helped Illinois, which reached the second round of the NCAA tournament, with 17 doubles victories.

More accolades for Spillane. Former Illinois first baseman Bren Spillane was named to the Perfect Game All-American first team and D1Baseball.com's All-American first team, both publications announced Wednesday.

Spillane, who hit .389 with 23 home runs and 60 RBI this season, was getting drafted last week by the Cincinnati Reds and signed with the Reds on Tuesday.

Spillane, along with former Illinois teammate Michael Massey (.326 average, three home runs, 46 RBI), were also named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first team, the American Baseball Coaches Association announced Wednesday.
